First Floor Underfloor Heating Installation on a Suspended Timber Floor
A custom tongue & groove underfloor heating solution designed for a self-install residential renovation project.

Project Overview
The client contacted us looking for an efficient Underfloor Heating Solution for the first floor of his home.
The project presented two key challenges:
- Installing underfloor heating on a suspended timber first floor
- Providing structural floor support where no existing OSB or plywood flooring was in place
To overcome these challenges, our team recommended a tongue & groove routed chipboard system that combines both floor structure and underfloor heating functionality within a single solution.
The Solution
The selected system consisted of routed structural OSB boards designed specifically for underfloor heating installations.
The panels are precision-routed to accommodate underfloor heating pipework while simultaneously acting as the structural floor deck. Once installed, the system is capped with a cement particle cover board, creating a stable surface suitable for a wide variety of floor finishes.
This low-profile solution allowed the project to achieve:
- Efficient heat distribution
- Structural floor support
- Minimal floor build-up
- Compatibility with multiple floor finishes

Installation Details
One of the most unique aspects of this project was that the client completed the installation himself, without the use of professional installers or contractors.
This highlighted the versatility and accessibility of the system, demonstrating that the product can be installed not only by construction professionals, but also by confident DIY homeowners with technical guidance and support.
Throughout the installation process, our team provided ongoing assistance via phone consultations and on-site visits to ensure the project progressed smoothly.
Pipe Layout & Design Support
From Hand-Drawn Plans to a Complete Heating Design
Pipework was designed to travel beneath the boards and between the joists before rising into the routed panels to begin each heating loop. Once completed, the pipes returned beneath the floor and back to the manifold, creating a complete heating circuit.
The CAD layouts and installation drawings helped simplify the process and gave the customer confidence throughout the installation.
